If your faucet is leaking around the packing gland it will most likely be due to the nylon washer on the back of the packing. This washer may have a crack in it or be damaged in some way, which will allow small amounts of water to seep through the packing gland. This can be fixed by replacing the stem. The stems come in two inch increments, and can be found by measuring your stem from end to end.
